Needle bearings are specially designed for applications with high loads and limited installation space. They owe their name to the needle-like rolling elements. The rolling elements are elongated, cylindrical rollers with a length-to-diameter ratio that is large compared to the diameter. Needle bearings are used in a variety of applications, especially in gearboxes, packaging machines, and tool machines. Due to their design, radial needle bearings have a remarkably high radial load capacity.
If only a limited installation space is available, needle bearings without inner rings (needle roller cages, needle sleeves, needle bushes) can also be used. However, this requires that the surface on which the needles run must be hardened and ground.

Needle roller bearings are available in different designs. Each of them addresses different requirements and is suitable for different applications.
The simplest ones are needle cages. They consist of needle rollers loosely held in a cage, which run directly on the corresponding surfaces of the shaft and housing. Needle cages enable cost-effective bearings with minimal radial height, provided that the running surfaces are hardened and ground.
Needle sleeves and needle bushings consist of a needle cage running in a cold-formed, deep-drawn outer ring made of hardened steel sheet. The thin-walled outer ring, which is not ground, assumes its final shape by pressing into the bearing bore and requires sufficient support to utilize the maximum load capacity of the bearing. This support is ensured by firm housing fits, usually without additional axial fixation.
Needle sleeves are open on both sides. They are typically used as non-locating bearings. The needle bushings are closed on one side and can also accommodate low axial forces due to their profiled bottoms. They are well suited for final position bearings at shaft ends.
Needle sleeves and needle bushings typically run directly on the shafts, which must act as raceways. Here, too, it is necessary for the running surface to be hardened and ground.
Inner rings are used whenever the shaft cannot be used as a suitable raceway for needle cages, needle sleeves, needle bushings, or needle bearings, due to lack of hardening, grinding, or similar conditions. They have finely machined or ground optimal raceways for the needle rollers.
Sealed versions of needle bearings and needle bushings are also available. Depending on the design, one or two sealing lips are integrated into the outer ring. While needle bushings have only one seal on the open side of the outer ring, needle sleeves are available with either one-sided sealing or with sealing on both sides.
Adjustable needle bearings stand out due to the possibility to make axial adjustments, for example, to compensate for misalignments between the shaft and housing.
A special type of needle bearings are the clutch bearings. These are one-way clutches consisting of thin-walled outer rings with clamping ramps, plastic cages, pressure springs, and needle rollers. These components allow the transmission of torque in one direction and are characterized by their radial compactness.
